WATCH: French police on Friday continued to hunt for a tiger, originally spotted near Disneyland Paris, with reports the cat had apparently crossed a major highway and slinked past a gas station.
MONTEVRAIN, France – A tiger eluding scores of security forces near Disneyland Paris has apparently crossed a major highway and slinked past a gas station – and is still on the loose.
A dozen police vehicles lined a grassy area where the big cat was spotted early Friday, after a day of searching failed to capture the tiger, whose origins remain a mystery.
A few officers guarded a school as children arrived for class Friday morning in Montevrain, where the animal was first seen near a parking lot Thursday, prompting a massive search in the largely wooded area east of Paris.
An official with the police department in charge of the region said Friday that the animal was spotted in a clearing on the south side of the town of Bussy-Saint-Georges.
The new sighting was on the other side of the A4 highway from where the tiger was initially seen, about eight kilometres (5 miles) away, the official said. The official was not authorized to be publicly named according to police policy.
Both sites are about 10 kilometres 6 miles) from Disneyland Paris. The operator of the theme park says it has no tigers and isn’t taking any special precautions, because the loose animal isn’t deemed a threat.
A wild cat animal park in the region, the Parc des Felins, said none of its cats is missing.
