Over 1,000 people left off voters list on Musqueam Lands in Vancouver

With less than 48 hours till voters cast their ballots in Vancouver’s civic election, over one thousand voters have been left off the voters list.

Even though the glitch has been fixed, many worry it could impact one of the closest races in the province.

The voters are on the Musqueam Lands, on Marine Drive near UBC.

Janice MacKenzie, Vancouver’s Chief Election Officer, says the error was quickly amended, and material is being hand-delivered to affected households before the weekend.

“Our records indicate that 35 of the 1,069 eligible voters in this area have already registered and voted at an advance poll,” says MacKenzie.

The error was discovered at one of those advance polling stations.

“They’ve done a really good job of making sure all of our band members and leaseholders got the proper information,” says Musqueam Chief Wayne Sparrow. “But we had to track down 12 people on foot to go door-to-door to make sure they had what they needed for Saturday.”

Those votes could be enough to swing what is expected to be a very close race in Vancouver.

Recent polls indicate a four-to-five point gap with Mayor Gregor Robertson ahead of the challenger Kirk LaPointe of the NPA.

Time is running out for candidates to make a final push before the polls close Saturday.
