WATCH: Security video shows a shopkeeper in England take on a person attempting to rob his store with a machete.
TORONTO – Police have released security footage of a Sunderland, England shopkeeper fighting off a machete-wielding assailant who attempted to rob his store over the weekend.
According to police, the suspect entered a Max & Sons store in Eden Vale early Saturday morning and threatened an employee with a machete.
“The footage is clearly distressing as it shows the man going in armed with the machete and struggling with the shopkeeper,” acting Detective Sergeant Nick Lawrance said in a police report.
“This sort of incident is extremely unusual in the area and I’d like to reassure people we’re doing everything we can to trace the man in the CCTV.”
In the video, the staff member can be seen grabbing a weapon from underneath a counter before taking on the suspect in a duel.
After a brief struggle, the unidentified assailant escapes empty-handed. The shopkeeper suffered a minor hand injury.
While the suspect remains at large, police are appealing to the public for help.
“This is why we’ve released the images – we want people to let us know who this is,” added Lawrance. “Someone out there will have information about who this is and I’d encourage them to get in touch with us, anonymously if necessary.”
