REGINA – The NDP is criticizing a move by the Saskatchewan government to cut funding to a program that encourages aboriginal students to get involved in science.
MLA Buckley Belanger says the government cut $10,000 in funding to the Science Ambassador Program, which involves University of Saskatchewan students visiting and educating aboriginal students in northern communities on science.
Belanger asked how the government could justify what he called “nickel-and-diming” aboriginal education.
Advanced Education Minister Kevin Doherty said the government has put $295 million in First Nations and Métis education and skill development in the past seven years.
The program had 16 students visit nine communities in northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, teaching more than 1,800 students.
The program is still being funded through various donors including the university.
