VERNON – Temperatures in the Okanagan have started to dip below freezing and while Kelowna has enough beds to get through the winter months, that’s not the case in Vernon.

Extra emergency shelter beds have been opened up for people most at risk from the cold in Vernon.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

On Sunday, staff at Gateway House shelter opened up their extreme weather response beds.

They are black mats and there are 10 of them in total. Staff at the shelter say there is concern the Gateway Shelter could exceed capacity this winter.

They are making contingency plans should there be an overload of people needing its services.

There are about 80 beds set up in two different shelters in Vernon year-round, all of which have been full every night since the extreme weather temperatures kicked in three days ago, according to staff.
