It may have been a beautiful but cold Remembrance day but the fire department in Maple Ridge was kept busy since 7:30 a.m. this morning with more than 67 wind-related calls.

High winds in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows knocked down wire, trees and caused power outages.

BC Hydro’s Simi Heer said 43,000 customers on the Mainland and South Vancouver Island lost power today due to the wind.

Maple Ridge assistant fire chief Michael Van Dopp said even though they had their entire on-call staff out to help, there were no injuries due to the wind storm.

Along with taking out power lines and causing road closures throughout Maple Ridge, one homeowner experienced major damage due to the blustery winds.

Maple Ridge resident Paul Surridge said winds had been gusting all morning and this afternoon one of his Cottonwood trees came down on his family’s home, causing major damage.

“The tree came down and went right through our roof and interior ceiling,” Surridge said.

The tree’s branches pierced through the Surridge’s kitchen, living room and garage.

“Thankfully no one was hurt,” Surridge said.

The fire department said the home’s structure was not safe for the family to stay in.
