New York deputy charged, resigns after expletive-laced video goes viral

TORONTO – A sheriff’s deputy in upstate New York has resigned and is facing criminal charges after an online video appearing to show the officer slapping a young man went viral over the weekend.

The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference Monday to announce the resignation of Deputy Shawn Glans.

Glans, 48, has been in law enforcement for nearly two decades. He was also charged with official misconduct and harassment.

The Albany Times Union reports the confrontation between Deputy Glans and two unidentified residents of Halfmoon occurred early Friday morning in a Walmart parking lot.

Video of the confrontation, recorded on a cellphone, appears to show Glans cursing at one of the men and insisting he has a right to search his vehicle, which had a rifle on the backseat.

“I wasn’t in my car when all this was happening,” the unidentified man says. “Why don’t you want to search, like, my house or something?”

“Let me see your f***ing keys,” the deputy says as he approaches the man. “You want to f***ing resist?”

The deputy then allegedly slaps the man, which can be heard but happens off camera. The deputy can then be heard to tell the man recording the video, “I’ll rip your f***ing head off.”

Sheriff Michael Zurlo called the actions of Sergeant Glans “completely inappropriate and unwarranted.”

“His actions served no purpose in the furtherance of the investigation that he was conducting and have greatly undermined the public trust of this agency,” said Zurlo in statement.
