VERNON -The local legion branch expects Kal Tire Place in Vernon will be full to the rafters Tuesday as the community gathers for the annual Remembrance Day ceremony.
There is renewed interest in marking the solemn holiday this year after Canadian soldiers were killed in Quebec and Ottawa.
“We feel an electricity in the air,” says John Miller president of Royal Canadian Legion Branch #25 of the public response to this year’s poppy campaign.
The surge of interest in Remembrance Day a welcome change.
“The last few years have been kind of a lull because the kids coming out of school their history classes don’t teach it anymore,” says Miller.
After the events of last month, police planning to keep a watchful eye over ceremonies this year.
North Okanagan RCMP say they will remain vigilant at local services.
“Because of what has happened in Ottawa there is a heightened awareness of that,” says Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “We have not been advised of any threats.”
For the local legion president it will be business as usual tomorrow.
“We trust people,” says Miller. “We tend to trust our community.”
In Vernon the public ceremony will begin at 9:50 Tuesday morning.
