KELOWNA – The Kelowna Fire Department was called to a residence on Charleswood Drive on Friday afternoon for what turned out to be a furnace fire.

Platoon Captain Kelly Stephens says the homeowner had a mechanical company doing repairs on the oil heater, which caused the fire.

Stephens says the homeowner, his wife and the mechanical company staff all evacuated the building immediately and then called the fire department.

He adds crews arrived on scene and were able to quickly extinguish the fire.

The homeowner and his wife are both okay, but Stephens says due to significant smoke damage throughout the house, they have been evacuated from the home for the night.

Stephens says they cannot determine how the furnace started a fire. Adding they still need to talk to the mechanical company that was doing the work to get more information.

With winter on the way and temperatures cooling down, Stephens says furance fires can be a common occurance.

He says the homeowners and the mechanical company dealt with the situation properly by shutting everything down, trying to put out the fire with an extinguisher, and then calling the fire department.

He reminds everyone to test their smoke alarms to ensure they are working.
