Derailment: 17 empty cars jump the tracks

CP rail crews spent much of Thursday clearing debris and assessing the damage caused by a 17 car derailment.

It happened around 2:00am, when the empty grain cars jumped the tracks near Pearce, 20 minutes east of Fort Macleod.

“There have been no injuries and no public safety issues. Safety is priority at CP and we take every incident seriously,” said CP spokesperson Salem Woodrow. “CP immediately enacted emergency protocols. All safety precautions and measures are being taken as our crews respond to the situation.”

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the cause of the derailment.

“We’re looking into the infrastructure of the rail, the mechanical side of it, we’re also going to get the locomotive event recorder, and any video cameras that may have been on the locomotive,” said regional senior investigator, James Carmichael.

The undamaged cars were sent back down the track to Lethbridge, and rail traffic has been rerouted.
