33-year-old Edmonton man arrested in child sex abuse case

EDMONTON — An Edmonton man who is accused of sexually abusing his five-year-old niece is also facing child porn offences following a month-long investigation by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT).

The investigation began in B.C., when officers posing as an underage girl began talking with the 33-year-old online. During the conversations, RCMP say he tried to set up a meeting for sex in B.C. and also shared child pornography.

A further investigation revealed he was also reportedly sexually abusing his 5-year-old niece.

His name will not be released to protect the girl’s identity.

He was arrested Oct. 23 and faces the following charges:

  • Child luring;
  • Possession of child pornography;
  • Distributing child pornography;
  • Making available explicit material to a child;
  • Sexual assault;
  • Sexual interference.

The man is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 13.

Investigators continue to examine the electronic devices, including computers, that have been seized from the suspect’s home.
