VANCOUVER – The Queen Charlotte RCMP are investigating after thousands of dollars were stolen at a fundraiser for the Haida Gwaii SPCA.

The fundraiser had taken place at the Queen Charlotte Community Hall and police say, in the early morning hours of Nov. 2, someone entered the kitchen area and stole the cash box. People were still milling around waiting to leave.

When the Queen Charlotte RCMP showed up, they searched the area and found the cash box empty, in the farmers market area. While one officer was dealing with the evidence, police say a red, full-sized, lifted, newer Ford truck came along Bay St. and as the officer tried to stop it, the truck sped off.

The officer gave chase but the truck did not stop.

The cash box and other items have been sent to Prince Rupert for forensic analysis.

Police say the truck being in the area may just be a poorly-timed coincidence and are asking the driver and occupants to contact police. The truck has since been located and impounded under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Police are asking anyone who has any information to come forward.

If you have information about this crime or any other crime in the area contact Queen Charlotte RCMP at 250-559-4421 or Crimestoppers at 705-476-847.
