WINNIPEG — The chairman of the NDP caucus says his job is to try to unite MLAs, not speak to leadership concerns that have divided the party.

“That’s going to be my focus for the next while: how we can come together for Manitobans,” said Matt Wiebe. “It’s going to be more challenging now….but that’s our focus.”

Wiebe spoke following the resignation of five cabinet ministers who had suggested Premier Greg Selinger reconsider his leadership. That necessitated a cabinet shuffle that promoted former backbenchers to the front row of government on Monday.

The MLA for Concordia was not at the swearing-in ceremony yesterday for several new cabinet ministers, but said that’s simply because he had a meeting in his constituency “at that exact time” he said he couldn’t miss.

“The premier has made his decision known … and I support him in terms of his decision. My focus as caucus chair is to make sure the business of the house continues,” said Wiebe.

Opposition Leader Brian Pallister said business is not continuing and everything that has happenned in the last week is proof of a “disfunctional” government.

Palliser said he wants the fall session to start as scheduled, and instead of waiting for the premier to lay out the government throne speech, he plans to introduce his own vision for the year ahead.
