Recapping a successful regular season for the Saskatchewan Huskies

Watch above: Kim Thue looks back at a successful regular season for the Saskatchewan Huskies, their first six-win season since 2010.

SASKATOON – The eight-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies finished the regular season at 6-2, their first six win season since 2010.

Now they attempt to win their first playoff game since 2009 when they play host to the unranked Manitoba Bisons on Friday.

It was an up and down regular season for the Huskies but overall the team has to be happy with themselves heading into the playoffs.

In his third season as the team’s starting pivot, Drew Burko threw for 2,256 yards, which is actually 55 fewer yards than a season ago. However, after throwing for just 10 touchdowns as a sophomore, Burko tossed 21 majors in 2014, second most in the country and the most by a Huskies QB since 2004, when Steve Bilan threw 25.

Burko spread those touchdowns and yards around. Five players had over 20 catches and 250 plus yards.

Leading the way was John Trumpy, fresh off five years off junior football with the Saskatoon Hilltops. Trumpy had a team high 35 receptions, 495 yards and five touchdowns.

The Huskies also got solid production through the air from the Hillis brothers, Brydon Ozmun and Andre Lalonde.

Despite having the fewest yards in the Canada West on the ground, Jarvis James, Shane Buchanan and Tyler Chow all had bright spots in 2014, with the rookie Chow emerging late in the season as the number one back.

On defense, the 28 points-per-game given up by the Dogs was the second fewest in the conference, while their 21 take-aways led the Canada West.

While several players had standout years on the defensive side of the ball, no-one shone brighter than Mark Ingram. The Imperial, Sask. product was second in the Canada West with 48.5 tackles and led the entire country with six interceptions.

The Huskies had an identical 3-1 record at home and on the road in 2014 and enter the post-season having won four of five, while averaging just a tick below 40 points per game in their last two wins.
