VERNON – RCMP say a gun safe containing 22 firearms was taken from a shed-type structure attached to a trailer in the 9500 block of Highway 97 north of Vernon.
According to police, there were 17 rifles and five handguns inside.
“We are still trying to determine all of the firearms that were inside that locked safe,” says RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “They were stored properly.”
Officers were called in around 3:45 p.m. Sunday but police say the break and enter could have happened earlier that day, around 4:00 a.m., when a loud bang was heard.
“It is very concerning to us that you have all of these guns in who knows hands at the present time,” says Molendyk. “There is a black market for firearms out on the street. A lot of them go for illegal purposes as a result of being out there.”
RCMP say the several people would have been needed to move the safe.
Police are asking anyone with information to call RCMP.
