SASKATOON – The Saskatoon Food Bank received a large donation Monday after a group of high school students spent part of their Halloween night taking part in a food drive.

Roughly 280 St. Joseph High School students participated in the school’s annual ‘We Scare Hunger’ food drive.

This year’s collection was the largest in its history, according to organizer and teacher Rachelle Kelln.

“A couple of years ago we hit about 13,000 pounds,” said Kelln.

“This year, I look behind me and I am astonished at how much the people of Saskatoon were generous,” she said, referencing the many bags and boxes of food in the school’s main hallway.

Kelln could not give an exact measurement of how much food was collected, however she said there was no question that it was larger than years past.

Three years ago, she set a goal to grow the annual initiative and says it has. The food drive used to consist of roughly 20 routes throughout the city and has now grown to 84.

“The kids go out on Halloween evening, they can dress up,” said Kelln, who is a French immersion instruction teaching history and English at the high school.

“They have a lot of fun with it, they love the idea that they can make a difference,” added Kelln.

Alyssa McCullough and Arielle McKay are two students who helped plan the food drive and took part in it. Both said the experience was rewarding.

“It was really cool seeing how much people gave and cared about giving food to people who needed it,” said McCullough.

“We need to give back to the community,” added McKay.

“We have so much and it’s very important to give back to the people who don’t have as much as us.”
