HALIFAX – Nova Scotia’s police watchdog has cleared two RCMP officers of wrongdoing in the arrest and detention of a man who suffered broken ribs while in custody.

The Serious Incident Response Team says there are no grounds to lay charges against either Mountie in connection with the July 4 incident in Enfield.

The team says a 45-year-old man was arrested for public intoxication and taken to the local detachment about 30 minutes north of Halifax.

While there, the team says the man grew aggressive and tried to kick one officer in the abdomen but missed, striking her arm instead.

That’s when another officer grabbed the man around his torso and pulled him to the ground.

The man later complained of pain and was diagnosed in hospital with cracked or fractured ribs.

In its report, the team concludes the officers were justified in arresting the man and the force used at the detachment was reasonable.
