Vancouver men kick off Movember with a shave

WATCH: Movember starts with a close shave

Goodbye Halloween, hello Movember. With the start of a new month, many men will be sporting new facial hair in support of prostate cancer research and other men’s health issues.

On Saturday, many Vancouver men kicked off Movember with a shave as registered participants need to start the month with a whiskerless face before cultivating their facial hair to raise funds and awareness.

Former Vancouver Canuck Dave Babych, whose glorious moustache was a memorable part of the team’s 1994 Stanley Cup run, kicked off Movember with a straight razor shave. He was joined by rapper Prevail of Swollen Members, who trimmed off a beard that he says will take several months to grow back.

Originally started as a grassroots movement in Australia, Movember has grown into a global fundraising effort. This year, the Movember Foundation announced a large investment in the quality of life for men living with prostate cancer through the launch of its new program, True NTH.

Babych says moustaches often end up being conversation starters, giving men a rare time to talk about their health.

“Men are creatures of habit,” says the former NHL defenceman. “They don’t talk very much about anything. If this can bring awareness where they can start talking about it with their friends and make sure they get in to see doctors, it could certainly help in their health moving forward.”

Although some joked that Babych will likely have his moustache back by day’s end, he says his trademark whiskers should be back in about three weeks when he will take part in the Movember Moustache Miler charity run.
