VICTORIA – Advance polling stations opened in some B.C. municipalities on Saturday, when voting was temporarily suspended in Surrey after an error was discovered on ballots.
Surrey’s deputy chief election officer Susan Ho says the name of the membership organization had been inadvertently omitted on ballots for two candidates running for councillor.
Ho says the mistake was pointed out during the first two hours of the advance poll and that voting was stopped for 55 minutes, until revised ballots could be printed.
She says polling stations will be open for an extra 55 minutes, until 8:55 p.m., and that ballots cast before the mistake was found will be kept separate as the city’s chief election officer awaits direction from Elections BC.
Advance polling stations will open in most of B.C. on Wednesday, 10 days before general voting day on Nov. 15 for the election of municipal politicians, representatives for park boards, school districts and other local organizations.
