PHOTOS: Superheroes make Halloween memorable for brain injury survivors

Watch above: Batman and half a dozen superheroes and pop culture characters descended on Bonnie Doon Mall today to cheer up those who need a lift. Laurel Gregory reports.

EDMONTON — A group of superheroes took the day off from fighting crime Friday to help brighten the day of some Edmontonians in need of a lift.

Batman, Superman, Spiderman and the rest of their gang spent the afternoon at Networks Activity Centre at Bonnie Doon Mall. The centre provides a supportive environment for adult survivors of stroke and brain injury.

“We want to give them community and people to talk to, and then ideally people that they can talk to about their injuries so that they’re not just bottling it up and holding it in,” said Akira Neeson with the Network Activity Centre.

The superheroes are part of a local group called C3: Caring Characters Cosplay. The volunteer group was formed at this year’s Edmonton Comic & Entertainment Expo. Their goal is to bring a bit of joy to those who need it most.

“The reason we chose superheroes is because it’s an iconic thing. You don’t really need an introduction for them to be familiar with you,” said David Huculiak, C3 founder. “Everybody at some point as a child recognizes certain figures like Batman, Superman, the real big ones.”

Cassidy Tomma was thrilled to see the special visitors. The 35-year-old suffered head trauma while working on drilling rigs near Grande Prairie in 2011.

“It is very uplifting, seeing other people being silly.”

The group also stopped by the Stollery Children’s Hospital Friday morning. Some of the other characters included Batman’s sidekick, Robin, and Cinderella.
