LA RONGE, Sask. – Claude Resources has been handed a fine after a diesel spill in northern Saskatchewan last year.

Approximately 24,000 litres of fuel spilled from a storage tank at the Seabee mine in January 2013.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The spill affected the bank and shoreline on Laonil Lake and had to be contained by a boom.

Environment officials determined the tank, located 35 metres from the shoreline, had been serviced by an uncertified installer and a connection point failure resulted in the diesel release.

Claude Resources pleaded guilty in La Ronge provincial court to one charge under the federal Fisheries Act and one under Saskatchewan’s Environmental Management and Protection Act and handed a fine of $172,000.

The Seabee gold mine is located approximately 125 kilometres northeast of La Ronge.
