West Island neighbourhood watch online

KIRKLAND-  Amid concerns over safety, families in the West Island have found their own way to protect their families and their neighborhoods.

West Island Watch is a different kind of neighbourhood watch.

“The old fashioned way of people within a few blocks keeping track of comings and goings is only part of the solution,” explains West Island watch creator Karine Saba.

Saba started the group on Facebook back in 2010 after a string of robberies near her Kirkland home.

“It was hard to get information from the police, but i understand why,” she said.

“They didn’t want to compromise their investigation and we wanted to know more to protect ourselves.”

Close to a thousand people are part of the group and the news on the site comes from Kirkland, Beaconsfield, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Pierrefonds and Dollard-des-Ormeaux.

Saba and other administrators vet potential new members to ensure that those in the group aren’t a threat themselves.

“Its great.  We have a lot of information,” said Saba.

“Last week there was a shooting on St. Jean boulevard. The crime was still in process and we all knew it was happening.”
