CALGARY – Police took two people into custody on Tuesday following a pursuit that started in downtown Calgary and ended on the highway near High River.
It began after investigators say someone stole a truck near the Drop-In Centre around 8:30 p.m.
Officers followed the truck as it traveled southbound along Macleod Trail, before entering a parking lot on 18th Avenue S.W.
When investigators attempted to stop the vehicle by blocking it in, they say the driver rammed one of their police cruisers and sped off.
At one point, a passenger who was inside the vehicle got out. Police took that person into custody.
Police continued to track the vehicle with the HAWCS helicopter as it traveled through Calgary, and RCMP followed the truck after it left the city limits.
At one point, the driver rear-ended an unmarked RCMP cruiser near Aldersyde, but didn’t stop.
RCMP were eventually able to stop the vehicle with the use of a spike belt.
The driver was taken down by a Calgary police dog before being arrested.
In a news release Wednesday, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said ‘it was at this time that the driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital’.
ASIRT will investigate ‘to determine whether the actions of the police were lawful and appropriate for the circumstances’.
Police say both alcohol and drugs are considered factors in the incident.
Charges are pending against the driver, but not the passenger.
