Steinbach elementary school opens time capsule

WINNIPEG – Staff and students at Woodlawn School in Steinbach travelled back in time on Tuesday.

The elementary school hosted a special assembly where they opened a time capsule created in 1989, a giant barrel with instructions written on the front to open it in 2014.

Items inside included a cassette tape, a VHS, an old school T-shirt and old photographs.

The school called in the principal and the custodian from 1989 to help open the time capsule.

“It was a thrill,” said Brian Shirmer, a former custodian who helped seal the time capsule 25 years ago. “I don’t remember any of the stuff in there either.”

Several students took turns holding up items to show their classmates. Staff chuckled as kids said they weren’t sure what a tape was.

“It brought up a lot of wonderful memories of my time here,” said former principal John Bestvater.

Global News asked Winnipeggers what they would put into a time capsule in 2014. Answers included a One Direction CD, an iPhone, a smart watch and a Justin Bieber poster.
