SASKATOON – City council has approved $2-million in funding to bump up construction of two new overpasses in Saskatoon.

The money will be used to hire an owner’s engineer to get the projects at the intersections of Boychuk Drive and Highway 16 and College and McOrmond Drives rolling.

Growth and safety concerns prompted councillors to speed up construction from the original completion date of 2022.

“The traffic turning onto Boychuk is literally backed up all the way to Highway 11,” said Ward 9 Coun. Tiffany Paulson.

“It’s astonishing at 5:15 at night and people are speeding by at over 100 kilometers an hour inches from traffic that’s waiting to turn.”

The two overpasses are scheduled to be completed in 2017 at a cost of $35-million each.

Safety concerns at Marquis Drive and Highway 16 along with Wanuskewin Drive and Highway 11 were also brought up but any changes to those intersections are dependent on future funding.
