Deadly crash on Deerfoot Trail

WATCH ABOVE: The single vehicle collision shut down a southeast portion of Deerfoot Trail Sunday, as investigators worked to reconstruct the scene. Jenna Freeman reports.

CALGARY- One person has died after a serious crash on Deerfoot Trail on Sunday.

It happened just after 5:30 a.m. at the exit to Anderson Road.

Police say the SUV hit a lamp post and burst into flames. The driver of the vehicle did not survive.

At this time EMS say they’re unable to discern if the victim was male or female. They say it appears only one person was in the car, but because of the extent of the damage there is a possibility more victims may have been inside.

A witness who was at the scene said the vehicle caught fire almost immediately.

“I saw a cloud of dust and a little bit of smoke and I pulled over and there was an SUV nosed into a light standard. There was a little bit of fire and by the time I got my truck to stop it was fully engulfed,” says Rod Bosch.

“You couldn’t get close to it, things were popping and cracking. People tried to get close to it, but you had to get them away from it.”

Investigators say it’s too early to determine if speed or alcohol may have been involved.
