RCMP tree planting tribute draws supportive residents

Riverview, NB – A monument has been planted to remember the sacrifice and service of RCMP officers in Moncton.

The Riverview Girl Guides planted five trees on Saturday to recognize three officers who were shot and killed and two others who were wounded during the June 4th rampage in the small city.

RCMP Constable Eric Dubois was one of the officers injured; he said he was touched by their tribute.

“What they did today means everybody is working together and everybody understands what is our sacrifice that we do everyday to protect the citizens,” he said.

Girl Guide Asha Belanger helped plant the five trees; she said people should recognize the RCMP’s service to the community.

Superintendent Paul Beauchesne, Codiac RCMP’s new superintendent, said the Girl Guides’ work deserve respect.

“Their values and missions are fairly similar to the ones RCMP hold and cherish in working with their communities so I’m very proud to be here,” he said.

The five maple trees were planted in a horseshoe pattern.

Girl Guides district commissioner Dorothy Gray said the pattern has a special meaning.

“It holds significance for the RCMP because they have the musical ride,” she said. “But it also holds significance for the Girl Guides. At the guide level, and that’s nine to 11 year olds in our organization, at the beginning of their meeting, traditionally they form a horseshoe formation.”

Asha’s mother, Susan Belanger, said her thoughts are also with Ottawa residents, who are going through a similar tragedy in their city.

“We feel what the people of Ottawa were going through and it immediately brought back all the feelings of fear frustration and anger and worry we all went through June 4th,” she said. “It really means a lot to take part in this and honour the RCMP in what they do for us and the military families.’

The memorial was supported by TD Canada Trust and the Town of Riverview.
