WATCH: Late Edmonton Mercury player honoured with 1952 Olympic footage

Watch above: Don Gauf’s son Jeff honoured his father’s life by digging up video footage from the 1952 Olympic games.

EDMONTON – Friday afternoon, I attended the memorial service for Don Gauf, who passed away Oct. 11 at the age of 87.

Don played for the 1952 Edmonton Mercurys, Canada’s gold medal winning hockey team at the Oslo Olympics.

Don’s son Jeff said he had a special surprise at the end of the service. He was right.

Through USA Hockey, Jeff obtained a couple of minutes of video from the Canada/USA final round robin game at the ’52 Olympics. The video quality is remarkable.

I have been following the Mercurys since 1990 when I did a story on George Abel from Melville, SK., who played on the Mercs. Since then, there has virtually been no live pictures of the Mercurys at the Olympic games.
