WEST KELOWNA – Designated drivers are encouraged by police but when police pulled over one car in West Kelowna Wednesday night, both the “designated” driver and passenger received violation tickets.

Police conducted the vehicle stop on a rented Chevy Impala on Bartley Road near Capri Road at around 11 p.m.

The vehicle was observed leaving a nearby liquor store.

Police say the driver was a 14-year-old boy acting as a chauffeur and designated driver for his 47-year-old father.

Police say the father was under the influence of alcohol.

Under British Columbia law, a person must be 16 years old to obtain a learner’s licence.

The rental car agreement showed the father listed as the only approved operator and the car.
