TORONTO – Shocking security video released by RCMP on Thursday showed the steps the Ottawa shooter took during his attack on the National War Memorial and into the Centre Block of Parliament Hill.
The RCMP identified Michael Joseph Zehaf-Bibeau, 32, and detailed his actions Wednesday morning in a detailed video presentation.
Witnesses interviewed by Ottawa Police reported seeing the shooter around 9:50 a.m. “coming from behind the War Memorial on the West side where he fires twice at Reservist Nathan Cirillo,” said RCMP.

RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson said the suspect’s weapon was a .30-30 Winchester lever-action gun.
Zehaf-Bibeau then positioned himself on an angle where Cirillo and his colleague can’t see him coming, since they are facing south. He fired one shot at the second guard, but missed. He was heard yelling something unintelligible in English, then ran north.
He then used a beige vehicle to drive from the National War Memorial, north on Wellington Street, and parked in front of the Elgin entrance. Zehaf-Bibeau entered Parliament Hill grounds on foot at 9:52:31 a.m. ET, running toward MP vehicles which were parked in the East Block.
The first 9-1-1 call received by police was pegged at 9:52:36 a.m. ET.

“At 9:53:16, video footage shows the suspect overtook one of these vehicles and drove toward Centre Block,” said RCMP.
Zehaf-Bibeau left the vehicle on the left side of the Peace Tower and ran toward the main doors of Centre Block with RCMP cars in pursuit at 9:53:37 a.m. ET.
“The suspect entered Centre Block at 9:53:46, seconds before the RCMP officers that were chasing him were able to reach the doors,” said RCMP, noting it took about one minute and 23 seconds between the time Zehaf-Bibeau parked the beige car and entered Centre Block.
A gunfire exchange ensued between the shooter and House of Commons Security and RCMP officers inside the Centre Block.
“The exact details of this exchange are still under investigation,” said RCMP. “The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.”
