A Canadian cartoonist’s illustration portraying the nation’s pain over the shooting death of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo is being described as poignant, powerful and tear-jerking.

Cirillo, a reservist from Hamilton, Ont., was gunned down at the National War Memorial in Ottawa Wednesday in what Prime Minister Stephen Harper has called a “terrorist” attack.

Bruce MacKinnon, an editorial cartoonist for the Halifax Chronicle-Herald, is being praised across the country for creating an image illustrating the country’s loss.

Twitter was abuzz Thursday morning with response to MacKinnon’s image.
