Halifax mayor says Parliament Hill shooting ‘hits close to home’

HALIFAX – Halifax mayor Mike Savage said his thoughts are with the residents of Ottawa and the family of the reservist who died in Wednesday’s attack on Parliament Hill.

Savage, who used to be a Member of Parliament working in Ottawa, calls the incident saddening and concerning.

The mayor said he has been working closely with the Chief Superintendent of the Nova Scotia RCMP as well as the Police Chief of the Halifax Regional Police.

“I think everything is being done. Certainly precautions are being taken to protect people who may be deemed to be particularly vulnerable.”

“I’m certainly pleased there’s a plan in place. I think people can take great comfort from that.”

He also notes the incident hits close to home.

“It does. We are a military town. We have all branches of the service here. We have many thousands of people who work in the military, serving members of the military, civilian members of the military. I think we all feel a particular closeness to those who are involved in the military,” he said.

Savage said extra precautions have been placed on City Hall as a precaution. Flags have also been lowered to half-mast.

“It’s another tough day. Hopefully it’s a day that will make us stronger.”
