SASKATOON – From the beginning, the Huskies looked outclassed in Winnipeg Friday night. It snowballed into a 40-8 beat-down.
“Certainly we had a lot of passengers on that trip,” admits head coach Brian Towriss, “There is no doubt about it.”
“When we looked at the film I think some guys were a little bit embarrassed with how they presented themselves and what they did.”
Huskies receiver Kit Hillis agrees with his coach’s’ assessment.
“We didn’t execute across the board,” says Hillis. “We left the defense out to dry a bit. Two and outs after two and outs.”
Despite the setback, the Huskies still hold their destiny in their own hands. At 4-2, the Dogs are alone in 2nd place, a game up on Manitoba and Alberta.
Considering the success the team has had at Griffiths Stadium in the past and its recent road woes, a home playoff date is imperative.
“I think we’ve shown we maybe play down to some teams on the road or don’t come out with the same sort of energy,” claims Hillis.
“A home playoff game is everything. This is as much a ‘must-win’ game as any.”
The Huskies will try to bounce back after their week-six setback when they play host to the 3-3 Alberta Golden Bears Saturday afternoon; a game that will have major playoff implications.
“Alberta is an improving football team,” Towriss says. “For the first time in a long time they are in the mix and hungry.”
The Huskies and Golden Bears kick off at 1:30 Saturday afternoon at Griffiths Stadium.
