Driver charged after bus carrying U.S. students crashed on Ontario highway

KITCHENER, Ont. – Police have charged a 71-year-old bus driver after a tour bus carrying a group of students headed to Toronto from Ohio was involved in a single-vehicle collision west of Kitchener.

The incident took place around 4 p.m. Tuesday on Highway 401.

There were 30 Grade 8 students on the bus, which was travelling from Columbus, Ohio, along with three adult chaperones.

One adult was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police say Thomas Peters of Sharpsville, Pa., has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with careless driving.

Police have also laid four additional charges under the act to passerbys who used handheld devices to photograph the scene while driving.
