WATCH: Police interview with Calgary murder suspect Derek Puffer

CALGARY – Police have released video of an interview they conducted with a man accused of killing a local radio legend and his wife.

Billy Powers and Donna Lee Powers were found stabbed to death in their Braeside home in July of 2013.

Donna’s son, Derek Puffer, is charged with two counts of 2nd degree murder.

Although he admits to committing the crime, a judge has been tasked with determining if Puffer can be held criminally responsible for the deaths depending on his mental state at the time.

On Tuesday, police released footage of a lengthy interview they conducted with Puffer after the deaths.

During the interview, Puffer tells a homicide detective he couldn’t stop himself.

“I just went in there after getting instructions and just stabbed them… and I can remember them going ‘no.’ And I don’t know why I didn’t stop. I was like in a trance.”

“I don’t know even know why I’d do something like that… I don’t know.”

Puffer said the instructions came from voices in his head.

“It is just so bizarre… it was a lot of chanting,” he said.

At one point during the nearly four-hour interview, which included breaks and naps, Puffer starts singing.

He’s expected to take the stand in his own defence on Wednesday.
