New distracted driving penalty takes effect Monday

VANCOUVER – As of today, expect to pay a higher penalty if you are caught engaging in certain behaviours behind the wheel.

Texting on a cell phone while driving, or talking without a hands-free device, will now get you three demerit points on your licence.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

That is on top of a $167 fine, which was already in place.

The number of points on a driver’s licence eventually affects insurance rates and ICBC is hoping that will deter people from checking their phone or taking a call while driving.

Police say all distracted driving behaviours are being targeted and that includes programming a GPS while a car is in motion.
