Brandon students take F1 models to Abu Dhabi

WINNIPEG – A team of high school students from Brandon are in for the race of their lives as they get ready to take their Formula 1 mini model across the world.

The model recently won the fastest F1 car model in North America. It was designed by six students at Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School who never thought one draft they made in class would turn into a car that would change their lives.

“I don’t think it still has set in that I’m going to be representing Canada at a world event,” said Delton Kreller, one of the team’s engineers.

After winning nationals in Michigan this past summer, the students are getting ready to compete at the world finals in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Most of the team members have never left Canada until now.

“Being able to go on my first plane ride when we went to Michigan and being able to go now on my second plane ride where I’m flying half way across the world it’s going to be a whole new experience,” said Savannah Wedgewood, the team’s graphic designer.

If they win, the students will receive $1.6 million dollars divided among them in scholarships to City University in London, England.

“This would be honestly the biggest dream ever to come true if we are to win,” said Kreller.

While winning may seem like a distant dream, the team coaches think it could become a reality because of the team’s work ethic.

“They ask me if they can stay later and they ask me to put more time in,” said team coach Tara Hamilton. “It’s a rarity when you have a teenager begging to have more work time on a project.”

Those long hours could earn them a big reward. F1 racing teams will be scouting young talent during the event, looking for budding race engineers.

“You see these racers that are travelling at over 200 kilometres an hour and then getting to sit down in a more intimate environment and talking to them directly I think is going to be absolutely incredible,” said Lee Gorowski, the team captain.
