University of Lethbridge tuition on the rise?

It’s been a stressful week for the University of Lethbridge Student Union, as it looks to respond to a Board of Governors proposal for two market modifiers.

One would cost all students an additional ten dollars per course, the other would only apply to Faculty of Management students, who would see an additional 100 dollar fee for each of their management courses.

Student Union President Sean Glydon has been heading the Union’s counter argument.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“As a student union we’re opposed to market modifiers, but even beyond that, the fact that this was given to us with so little time and it’s even been admitted to us by our administration that they don’t know exactly where the money is going.”

U of L Vice President of Academic Andrew Hakin supports the proposed fees.  He believes the future earning potential of Management students justifies the increase.

“Their salary expectations are somewhat higher and are realized compared to other students within the university. there is a market differential in the salaries one can obtain with a business background.”

Hakin also says the market modifiers would bring the U of L more in line with other Universities in the province.  He says the University of Alberta charges $35 more per course than the U of L.  At the U of C it’s $42 dollars more per course.

The Board of Governors is set to vote on the market modifiers Thursday night. If passed, it will be up to the provincial government to make the final decision.
