EDMONTON – Alberta RCMP has identified the victim of an October 12 homicide on the Samson Cree Nation as 18-year-old Tyrell Preston Soosay.

On Wednesday, a 21-year-old man from the Samson Cree Nation was charged with second-degree murder after human remains were found near a home on October 12.

The Calgary RCMP Major Crimes Unit charged Walter Samuel Louis with second-degree murder and indignity to a human body.

The RCMP says the victim and the accused were cousins and both residents of the Samson Cree Nation.

Investigators say there was indignity caused to the Soosay’s body by fire, but they would not say whether this occurred before or after his death.

On October 12, Maskwacis RCMP officers were contacted about a possible homicide at a home on the First Nation.

Maskwacis was known as Hobbema before changing its name at the start of 2014.

Adult human remains, which have since been identified as Soosay’s, were found near the house by officers and police service dogs.

The Calgary RCMP Major Crimes Unit was called in and has taken over the investigation.

The death was not gang-related, the investigation has found, and the public is not at risk, say officers.

Louis has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Wetaskiwin Provincial Court on Thursday, October 16.
