VANCOUVER – A prominent Vancouver lawyer is thanking the quick actions of his 12-year-old daughter for potentially saving his life.

In late August, Robert Gardner and his daughter Paige, were on their yacht’s skiff recovering prawn traps near Gabriola Island.

Gardner was using an electric winch to lift the heavy traps when a glove he was wearing got caught between a spindle and the rope.

His forearm immediately snapped but Paige had the quick foresight to hit the stop button.

The family then raced to a nearby floatplane dock for help and Gardner was taken to hospital.

“I heard him scream quite loudly,” said Paige. “So then I just turned off the switch. He taught me how to use the boat last year.”

Gardner was back on the boat in three days.

“I feel pretty lucky and I feel very thankful for my family,” he said.
