UPDATE: Charges laid after security breach at Regina International Airport

File / Global News

REGINA – A 26-year-old man is facing a number of charges following an early-morning incident at the Regina International Airport on Sunday.

Police were called at around 1:30 a.m. to respond to a report of a vehicle crashing through the airport’s perimeter security fence.

Regina Airport Authority CEO Jim Hunter explained that the driver crashed through a number of fences and gates before making his way to the airdrome, which is a secure area of the property.

“It’s on an area where aircraft operate and that’s always closely controlled. We just can’t have people, especially inebriates, running around in vehicles out of control,” Hunter said. “It’s a great concern to us, it doesn’t happen often fortunately, but it does happen.”

Investigators found an abandoned vehicle near the fences and after a lengthy ground search, involving the K-9 Unit, the driver – 26-year-old Scott Matthew Dack – was arrested without further incident.

Dack has been charged with Mischief, Impaired Drive, and Unauthorized Entry to a Restricted Area (Canadian Aviation Security Regulations).

There was no impact to operations at the airport as there were no flights scheduled at the time of the incident.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash and an investigation is ongoing.

Dack will make his first court appearance on Tuesday.
