SGI holds public consultations for safe drivers

Saskatchewan Government Insurance is asking for public feedback on the safe driver recognition program. File / Global News

REGINA – Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) wants you to help shape its safe driver recognition program (SDR) and that could mean a rate change.

The Crown corporation is accepting feedback online until the end of the month.

SGI is looking for ideas on a number of policy changes including increasing the financial penalty ‘per-demerit point’ and assigning demerit points to more kinds of speeding tickets.

Another proposal would see more savings for good drivers, paid for by penalties from the not so good drivers.

“Currently, the discount is a maximum of 20 per cent, so we have some people that want that to be higher,” said Kelley Brinkworth, SGI media relations manager.

“On the flip side, we have people that say, ‘Well, you should be tougher on bad drivers. The financial penalty should be greater.”

Feedback is being collected until the end of Oct. 31. It will be put into a report to be sent to government by the end of the year.

The SDR program was launched in 2002.
