VANCOUVER – The Nanaimo RCMP has put out a public warning following an incident involving a 12-year-old boy on Friday afternoon.

Police say at about 1:30 p.m. the boy was walking along Hammond Bay Road near Entwhistle Drive when he noticed a green van stopping opposite him.

He saw two Caucasian men inside the van. One of the men got out and opened a rear sliding door. He yelled at the boy to come over and look for something but the boy turned and ran back towards his elementary school.

Police say as he ran he noticed the van pull a U-turn and drive north along Hammond Bay Road.

Nanaimo RCMP arrived immediately and looked for the van but could not find it. They are going to release a sketch of the man who got out early next week.

“The youth was extremely bothered by the interaction. He also did everything we ask children to do when confronted with uncomfortable situations and should be commended for his actions,” said Const. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Police are looking for a green older-model GMC Safari van. The two men are described as Caucasian, middle-aged and heavy-set.

If you have information on this incident or van, contact the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. You can also submit your TIP online at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com
