University of Saskatchewan offering temporary bus service

SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan is going to make it easier for students and staff who rely on Saskatoon Transit.

Starting Friday, yellow school buses leased by the university will be available at 12 locations in the city to get people to and from the campus.

A lock out of unionized Saskatoon Transit users has left thousands of people looking for alternative means to get to their destination.

“We respect the parties involved in the Saskatoon Transit lockout and know that they will exercise their rights under legislation and collective agreements,” said Jeff Dumba, associate vice-president of financial services at the U of S and co-ordinator of the temporary service.

“That being said, not being able to access public transportation has become an increasing issue for some of our students in particular, and we want to help.”

The service will be for those who have no other means of transportation and in order to ride the leased buses, students and staff will be asked to show their U of S ID card.

The cost? Free.

Dumba is asking for patience as the service is set up.

“We have never organized a shuttle service of this magnitude before, so there may be glitches. We ask that students and employees be patient—especially with the bus drivers.”

Volunteers will be at the 12 stops on Friday and next Tuesday and Wednesday to answer questions and decided if more buses are needed.
