Codie Prevost surprises charitable Martensville student

Watch above: it was a dream come true for a Martensville student at a school assembly

MARTENSVILLE, Sask. – It was a morning assembly that Maizie Bowkowy won’t soon forget. The 12-year-old founder of Doggy Naps, a business out of Martensville, Sask., was surprised by country music star Codie Prevost at Venture Heights elementary school.

Prevost had been contacted by Bowkowy months ago when she requested to use his single “Someday” as part of her promotional video.

Doggy Naps specializes in handmade dog beds sewn by Bowkowy and her family; for every three sold, they donate one to a rescue facility. At the assembly, Bowkowy and her school were donating 31 dog beds to New Hope Dog Rescue as part of a larger school initiative, called One Book, One School, One Community.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Prevost performed “Someday” much to the surprise of the students at the school. A dog owner himself, Prevost thanked the school for their dedication to dog rescue and received two Doggy Naps of his own.

“When I wrote the song, it’s about finding hope and there are so many dogs out there that are homeless,” said Prevost.

“You see it all over and it’s a terrible thing so it’s really giving hope to that, and shining light on it and creating awareness. I think what Maizie has done at her age is just incredible.”

New Hope Dog Rescue Executive Director Ashley Marchi was on hand to receive the beds from the students, along with food, toys, leashes and more.

“We were so excited when they contacted us about this project,” said Marchi. “It’s incredible that young people take an interest in doing something with animal rescue. We need to build awareness so more schools will take part in something like this.”

For someone so giving, it was Bowkowy’s day to receive.

“Codie is my favourite artist and I just really love the song,” said Bowkowy after her surprise. “I had no idea what was going on. It was a dream come true.”
