Environment Canada confirms 19th tornado in Ontario

The storm that moved through the Cambridge region on Oct. 6 spawned a tornado around 10:30 p.m. Global News

TORONTO – Though Ontario may not have seen a lot of storms this season, it seems that many of them have produced some weak tornadoes.

On Wednesday, Environment Canada confirmed that the nineteenth tornado of the season occurred on Oct. 6 about 10 km southeast of Cambridge.

Around 10:30 p.m. a tornado moved through the Sheffield area, tearing shingles and siding off homes. It also downed trees and caused damage to numerous structures including a camper trailer.

Environment Canada investigators were dispatched to the area and concluded that the tornado was an EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale with peak winds of about 150 km/h. The tornado was about 150 metres wide and 1.5 km long.

Each year there are about 17 tornadoes reported in Ontario.
