WATCH: North Okanagan voters face multi-million dollar choice

VERNON – In next month’s municipal elections, many voters in the North Okanagan will be wrestling with more than who should be the next mayor.

They’ll also vote on whether the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) should be allowed to borrow up to $70-million to make improvements to water infrastructure.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The money would be used to complete six projects identified as priorities including installing filtration at the Duteau Creek Water Treatment Plant and raising Aberdeen Dam.

The RDNO says if voters reject borrowing the money, Greater Vernon Water won’t be compliant with provincial regulations.

The regional district says Interior Health could also order some of the projects to be completed which would allow RDNO to borrow money without a referendum.

If the borrowing is approved, the average domestic customer’s annual water bill is expected to increase by $36 each year for five years.
