SASKATOON – A firefighter was treated for a minor injury after battling a house fire in Saskatoon’s Lawson Heights neighbourhood early Tuesday morning.

Fire crews were called to 355 Coppermine Crescent just before 3 a.m. after multiple calls came in that a house was on fire.

After an investigation the cause has been deemed “undetermined”; however, the original of the fire was been traced back to a closed in, unheated storage area beneath a sunroom which then extended to the attic.

Fire was burning through the roof at the rear of the home when three engine companies and an aerial unit arrived.

The family and their pet had managed to get out prior to the arrival of first responders and an initial search confirmed there was no one inside.

A fourth engine company was called out due to the size of the fire, the proximity of a neighbouring house and the wind direction.

Fire crews took a defensive stand to battle the blaze and once firefighters were able to re-enter the house, extensive structural damage was found hampering them from reaching spot fires.

The blaze was brought under control in 90 minutes.

The siding and a fence of a neighbouring home was damaged along with overhead electrical lines.

One firefighter was treated at the scene for a minor injury and then returned to the station.

Damage is estimated at $750,000.
