Winnipeg’s largest school division votes to ban e-cigarettes

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg School Division has voted to ban e-cigarettes from school property in the city.

The products are new and need more study, and they do not belong in the classroom, said Trustee Anthony Ramos, who sponsored the motion.

The debate started off with some trustees wondering whether smoking policies already in place covered the electronic vapourizers.

There was also a motion to refer the ban to the school division’s policy committee, but it was defeated.

The Manitoba government has said it doesn’t mind school divisions and restaurants setting their own policies because they could be used in drawing up future legislation.
