EDMONTON – Shortly before noon on Saturday, October 4, Mayerthorpe RCMP and fire crews responded to an outdoor building containing hay bales that was on fire.
The structure was engulfed in flames when RCMP arrived.
Officials say the building sustained extensive damage, but an estimate has not been released.
While investigating, RCMP officers found an eight-year-old who admitted to starting the fire with a lighter and couldn’t extinguish it.
Because of the child’s age, charges will not be laid.
The eight-year-old has been referred to “Fire Starters”, a provincial arson prevention program.
